Meet the team
John Hughes DipPFS
John entered the Financial Services industry back in 1987 and became one of the ‘Men from the Pru’, honing his expertise to specialise in advising teachers and professionals – a more personalised area of financial advice. In 2001 he moved on from Prudential to become an Independent Financial Adviser, setting up Compass Independent Financial Services Ltd with Mike Eagle, his long-time friend and work colleague. He was then able to provide advice to his clients from across the whole marketplace, rather than the limited products offered by a single company, bank or building society.
John’s strength is the personal service he offers his clients which is his key to building long-term relationships, and this is demonstrated by the fact that many of his clients are also friends. He is a member of the Personal Finance Society. Living just on the outskirts of Norwich, John is married with three grown-up children, his eldest – Megan – being part of the Compass team. Outside of work John’s personal interests include traveling, and recently, motorcycle riding which he has taken up again following a 25-year break.
Christopher Griffin DipPFS CertSMP
Chris has a diploma in regulated financial planning and a certificate in advanced mortgage advice. He is also currently working towards becoming a Chartered Financial Adviser. Chris is a member of the Personal Finance Society.
Finding solutions to client’s objectives is the part of the role which Chris enjoys the most. He is very client focused and enjoys the variety of the areas of advice he covers.
Outside of work, Chris is an active member of various car clubs.
Non-Executive Director and Company Secretary
Married to co-founder, John, Jill has been part of the Compass team since the word go. Jill works part time and supports the back office team by assisting with the core office tasks such as reception duties, maintaining the electronic file system and preparing client reports. She has recently taken up golf, and also enjoys cooking, travel, theatre and walking Jensen and Georgie, the family dogs.
Executive Personal Assistant/Trainee Paraplanner
Ellena joined the Compass team in September 2013 to begin her career in financial services. Having completed her ‘A’ Level exams, she is currently working towards an apprenticeship and studying for her Level 2 qualification in Providing Financial Services. Ellena works closely with Megan and Joanne, providing them with valuable administrative support and shadowing them to learn from their expertise. Outside of the office, Ellena is very much the sporty type and particularly enjoys skiing and swimming.
Lisa Clark BSc
Graduate Trainee Financial Adviser
Lisa has recently joined Compass as a trainee Financial Adviser having graduated from the University of Essex with a first class BSc Mathematics degree. Lisa is excited to begin her career in Financial Services with Compass.
In her spare time, Lisa likes to take her dog for long walks, trying to bake various cakes and watching the latest crime dramas.
Client Relationship Administrator
Joanne has over seven years’ industry experience having worked in a range of different roles within the Financial Services sector, as part of a locally-based company of Independent Financial Advisers. Joining Compass in February 2013 on the administration side of the business, Joanne’s main duties are to provide admin assistance and supporting our Personal Assistants.
Outside work, Joanne enjoys a very active and creative lifestyle, with a need for adrenaline!
Jensen and Georgie
Jensen, a black and silver Miniature Schnauzer, has been working at Compass for the past few years as our Head Security Officer. Georgie, a black Miniature Schnauzer has recently joined as Jensen’s assistant. At work, their main responsibilities are meeting and greeting everyone who comes into the office, and frisking them for biscuits. In their spare time, they love helping John with the gardening and going on trips to the pet shop. Due to the Schnauzer’s busy schedule, they work part time and the schnauzer sign will be on the front door when they are in the office
David Bullard BSc CeMAP DipFA
David joined the financial services industry in 2003, after obtaining a degree in Management Science from Lancaster University. He worked initially as a mortgage and insurance broker. After five years developing his skills and enhancing his qualifications, he became a financial adviser for a large institution. Having enjoyed many years serving clients within the confines of a restricted advice offering, David felt the time was right to was enter the world of Independent Financial Advice to further enhance the service he was able to offer his clients.
David joined Compass as he felt “Compass came out tops as every client is dealt with as an individual with truly independent solutions. Although Compass is well established they haven’t lost their identity by getting too big, with service still at the heart of the advice process. On-going service and first class advice were paramount to me and my customers.” David has featured in The Telegraph as one of the highest rated financial advisers in the UK by the independent review service, Vouched For.
A keen sportsman, David holds a golfing handicap of 7. He has previously represented his local golf club as a committee member and was their head of business and finance.
Megan has over eight years’ industry experience working in a range of different roles within Financial Services. Megan joined Compass in March 2011 in a Senior Administrative role, progressing to her current role as Marketing Director. Megan is office based Mondays and Wednesdays, and collects emails when not in the office.
Megan has a very active toddler to care for which doesn’t leave her much time for hobbies, however, she does enjoy adult colouring books and is a member of Norwich Colouring Club
Nita is married to co-founder, Mike Eagle. Before joining Compass, she enjoyed a very successful 25-year career in local Government. Nita took early retirement from the local Government in 2011 to spend more time with her grandchildren and become a volunteer at the local primary school, where she supports young children with their reading and shares her love of books. Nita now works part time for Compass, assisting the back office team with general administration duties. In her spare time, she enjoys travel, theatre, the countryside and cooking – harbouring a secret addiction to cookery shows involving James Martin.
Executive Personal Assistant
Liz joined the Compass team in March 2016. She has more than 17 years of industry experience and holds the Financial Planning Certificate. Outside of the office she enjoys spending time with her young family and taking the dog on long walks.
Paul Burnham DipPFS
Paul has a wealth of experience in the financial services industry, having previously worked for Aviva and Edward Jones, before bringing his expertise to Compass in February 2009. He is a fully qualified stockbroker and holds the Diploma in Financial Planning. Paul enjoys working with his clients, helping them choose the most suitable investment strategy to reach their financial aims, whether it be income in retirement, or accumulating wealth prior to retirement. Paul’s other passion is football, and away from the office he is a football referee and committed Norwich City fan.
Senior Mortgage Adviser
Alice has recently joined the Compass team as our Senior Mortgage Adviser. She has previously worked providing direct advice, on mortgages and protection, at one of the world’s largest banks. She also has whole of market advice experience.
Alice first started her career in Financial Services in a customer service role, and it is from this approach, of putting the customer’s experience at the heart of everything, that she continues to work.
Outside of work, Alice enjoys baking and swimming, with the swimming often necessitated by the amount of baking consumed!
Office and Investment Manager
Dorian has several years’ industry experience, having begun his career as a stockbroker, before moving into fund management where he managed high net worth discretionary portfolios and fund of fund OEICS. A few years later, Dorian moved into the advising arena as a high net worth Independent Financial Adviser for a private bank, before taking a couple of years away from the industry to broaden his skills set, working as a lecturer in Business Studies and Economics.
Dorian joined Compass in 2011 and is a great asset to the team, holding various professional qualifications including the Diploma in Financial Services, the Financial Planning Certificate, the Investment Management Certificate, CF8 Long Term Care Planning, CF9 Pensions Simplification, G20 Personal Investment Planning and G70 Portfolio Management. Dorian is also a fully qualified stockbroker and options trader.
Mike Eagle DipPFS
Financial Adviser/Compliance Officer
Mike started in the Financial Services Industry when he was just 23 and petrol was just 79p per gallon! He worked for Prudential from 1978 till 1988 as a District Agent (AKA ‘The Man from the Pru’), which gave him a good grounding in client relationships. A promotion in 1988 saw Mike progress into sales management, based all around East Anglia, until 2000. Whilst at the Prudential he won numerous awards, based not only on sales but persistency, quality, and a wide range of products (holistic advice even in the 80s and 90s!).
A short stint in Sales Management at Britannic Assurance followed, which led to Mike turning redundancy into opportunity and co-founding Compass together with John. As an experienced Financial Adviser he provides a personal approach to all his clients and ensures all advice and services are tailored individually to meet his clients’ needs. As compliance officer, Mike uses his experience to ensure the processes and procedures within Compass are adhered too and understood by the whole team. He also supports all the administrators and advisers with their on-going training and development needs.
Outside of work he enjoys travel, clay-pigeon shooting and supporting his local football team. He is a proud Norfolk resident (born and bred), has three grown-up children and two grandchildren.
